The Centre for Applied Human Rights (CAHR) is an activist centre based at the University of York. The Centre’s work places people, notably human rights defenders (HRDs), at the core of its work and anchors all of its activities in real-world human rights challenges and opportunities.Since 2008, CAHR has provided a unique, effective and integrated programme to support human rights defenders from around the globe: ‘Protective Fellowship Scheme’.The fellowship offers a place of sanctuary, and a safe space for research and capacity development.  HRDs come to York for periods ranging from three to six months, where they benefit from respite, education and training, and networking opportunities designed to increase their effectiveness and promote social justice in their home communities. To date CAHR has hosted 112 Fellows from 52 countries.

The Centre was awarded a UNESCO Chair in the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Expansion of Political Space in 2023. It also hosts the Generating Respect Hub, a platform bringing together scholars with human rights and humanitarian actors to co-produce strategies for increasing compliance with humanitarian norms in times of war.

The Humanities Research Centre provides leadership and support for research, impact, knowledge exchange and public engagement across the world-leading Faculty of Arts & Humanities at the University of York.
