Fieldwork Programme for 1999
The priority for excavation will be the northern part of sector 2. It is now clear from the excavation in advance of the oil tank (Int 26) that the stratigraphic sequence is even deeper and more complex than previously thought and that the structures and deposits contained within this sequence may require unusually lengthy excavation and recording. Still with the aim of releasing the area for the car park as soon as possible, excavations in 1999 will concentrate on this area (Int 14 and the northern 8m of Int 24). The second half of Sector 2 which contains the stream bed and the slope connecting the sequence to Sector 1 will be excavated after that, commencing in 2001 or 2002.
In Sector 1, another area of 28m x 32m will be opened for mapping and excavation, this time across the entrance to the enclosure. Selected features will be excavated to aid identification and dating. Once the whole of Sector 1 has been mapped, probably by 2000, the research design will be revisited and selected structures and zones will be targeted for detailed study.
The regional surveys will continue in the design stage in 1999 and are planned to beginas soon as the Car Park excavation is completed and Tarbat Disovery Centre is opened.
