Socio-economic changes from the Early (AD 350 - 1000) to Late (AD 1000 - 1550) Ceramic Period in Araucania region, Chile: new perspectives from organic residues analysis of ceramic artefacts

Summary of research project:
My research is focused on assessing the socio-economic changes that took place throughout the Ceramic Period (AD 350 - 1550) in the Malleco Province, and Mocha Island, Southern Chile. For this, I am analysing past culinary practices through the molecular (lipids) content and δ13C isotopic signal of organic residues trapped in the porous matrix of pre-Hispanic pottery from different domestic sites. This research is supported by the Department of Archaeology, University of York, and the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development.
Profile
I studied a BA in Anthropology with a specialisation in Physical Anthropology at the University of Concepción, Chile. I arrived at the University of York in 2017 under a scholarship given by the Chilean National Agency for Research and Development to study an Masters in science in Bioarchaeology. I did my MSc dissertation in organic residues analysis of pre-Hispanic pottery from Southern Chile. In 2019 I was funded by the same scholarship to undertake a PhD, where I am currently developing the same topic that I did for my MSc, but including more sites and encompassing a wider chronological period.
I am interested in the use of archaeological science to approach different questions regarding South American archaeology, mainly focused on socio-economic changes, culinary practices, domestication, and human-environment interactions.
