Ewan is the Training Officer for the Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS), where he is responsible for designing and delivering training to users of the service.
With extensive experience in Higher Education (HE), Ewan has taught and provided training across a range of archaeological subjects as a technical specialist and associate lecturer. His roles have included designing and delivering lectures, seminars, and workshops. Ewan's commitment to teaching was recognised with the title of Associate Fellow of Advance HE, awarded for his achievement in meeting the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education.
In terms of research Ewan completed his PhD at the University of York in 2024, focusing on the functional morphology of British cattle. His research applied 3D imaging and analysis techniques to examine shape-related changes in the crania of both aurochs and domestic cattle. More generally Ewan has research interests in 3D imaging and scanning, digital methods in zooarchaeology, anatomy and morphology and human relationships with cattle through time. Much of his research involved 3D scanning and manipulation of 3D data.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Ewan has extensive experience as a senior field archaeologist. From 2011, Ewan worked in the commercial archaeology sector, managing below-ground archaeological investigations. He has supervised and led various commercial projects across the UK, including in Southern England, London, East Anglia, and Yorkshire. In addition, Ewan specialised in zooarchaeology, regularly conducting commercial analysis and reporting on animal bone remains from archaeological sites.
