Elizabeth Hicks wins prestigious SAfA Student Paper Award 2023
Elizabeth Hicks was awarded First Prize in the SAfA Student Paper Competition at the 26th Biennial Meeting of the Society for Africanist Archaeologists, held at Rice University, in Houston, Texas.
Their paper was titled “Ceramic Use, Cuisine and the Creation of Community along the Swahili Coast in the 1st Millennium AD”.
Elizabeth’s research combines a Chaîne Opératoire approach with Organic Residue Analysis to investigate the processes that shaped the manufacture, use and deposition of imported and local ceramics from the site of Unguja Ukuu (Zanzibar, Tanzania). Their research is funded by the White Rose College for the Arts & Humanities.
The competition was open to all graduate students attending the conference, both online and in-person. The award committee were impressed with Elizabeth’s innovative combination of methods, as well as the exciting preliminary results she presented from her ongoing research.
