Two new Collaborative Doctoral Awards now Available

Checkpoint Charlie: The Changing Values of a Cold War Icon

With a focus on the iconic Checkpoint Charlie, this timely and collaborative project (with Stiftung Berliner Mauer, or 'Berlin Wall Foundation') will use previously unresearched heritage archives combined with interviews to analyse changing views of the Berlin Wall over the past 60 years and examine the implications of this fluidity for future management of this and other contested heritage sites including in the UK.

Applicants must have a good first degree and a good Masters degree (ideally with Distinction) in subjects related to heritage studies. Such subjects might include (but are not confined to): Archaeology, Geography, History, Public History, History of Art, Sociology.

A strong candidate is also likely to have some relevant work experience in the heritage sector. The successful candidate must be highly proficient and ideally fluent in German.

The Melting Pot of Eboracum: exploring diversity and identity through skeletal and burial evidence in Roman York

This collaborative project with York Archaeological Trust aims to deepen our understanding and perception of diversity and inclusion in past societies by applying an innovative, multifaceted approach to burial evidence from Roman York, considering mobility, identity, health and diet and placing the results within their wider contemporary social context. This will be undertaken using meta-analysis of existing data, osteological, isotope and funerary analysis.

Applicants must have a good first degree and a good Masters degree (ideally with Distinction) in a suitable subject such as archaeology, osteology, bioarchaeology, funerary archaeology.
