The "Stone Dead" project will examine why stone tools were placed with the dead
Aimée Little has been awarded an AHRC Early Career Research Grant for her project "Stone Dead: Stone Tools and their Role in Mesolithic Mortuary Rites and Rituals".
In order to better understand why stone tools, often regarded as utilitarian objects, were sometimes placed with the dead, the STONE DEAD project will integrate a variety of scientific techniques, including geology, technological analysis and use-wear. Her project focuses on the lithic grave goods from two globally significant Mesolithic burial sites: Yuzhniy Oleniy Ostrov (Karelia, Russia) and Zvejnieki (Latvia).
