In 2021, the Department of Archaeology established a working group to explore decolonizing our teaching content and pedagogic practice. We worked as a ‘pathfinder department’ with the University of York’s inclusive learning team, to establish principles and actions to advance this initiative.
Through a consultative process with staff and students we created a set of guidelines for staff to think through creating a more diverse and inclusive reading list. As a whole, the department took away lessons around diversity and added to a series of aspirations now core to our department mission statement.
We have established a Google group on which we circulate news and announcements related to this topic.
