Governance of biodiversity change

jamie.carr@york.ac.uk

Biography

My PhD (University of Leeds) considered how achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals can affect forests. Before this, I worked for the International Union for Conservation of Nature, leading their work on climate change impacts on species. My BSc. and MSc., both in ecology and conservation, were gained at Anglia Ruskin University and the University of East Anglia, respectively. Much of my career has had a strong focus on species conservation, but this has increasingly broadened to include matters of sustainable development and conservation policy. My position with LCAB allows me to further my own multi-disciplinary interests alongside a diverse team of researchers, who provide novel perspectives and approaches to addressing the major issues facing the world.

Research

I am interested in all aspects of environmental conservation, but my recent work has focused on how progress towards achieving the sustainable development agenda can provide enabling conditions for conserving and restoring the world’s forests. My work at LCAB is a continuation of this line of enquiry, and will seek to identify the policy and governance processes that are most conducive to achieving both biodiversity and climate change targets simultaneously, typically through the conservation of high-biodiversity, high-carbon ecosystems such as forests and wetlands.
