Summer round up

It was a busy summer for LCAB. Staff and students represented the centre at a number of national and international events.

The World Biodiversity Forum in Davos, Switzerland

Chantal Berry presented papers at various events, including discussions on soundscapes in early modern England at Newcastle University and the University of York, as well as a collaborative project on late mediaeval farming in Granada, Spain. Theo Tomking participated in a workshop on decolonizing soil research and agricultural policies at the University of Greenwich. 

Hien Luong presented at the World Biodiversity Conference in Davos on the impact of alternative biodiversity metrics on investment distribution. Helen Mylne presented her research on elephant social networks at the European Conference on Behavioural Biology in Zurich.

Christopher Lyon participated in workshops on sustainable food systems and attended the PECS III Conference in Montreal, where he discussed resilience in the context of global environmental change. Lindsey Gillson and Chris Lyon attended a workshop on land use futures, which was part of a collaboration between York and Mahidol University. Lindsey Gillson attended a workshop aimed at enhancing biodiversity conservation strategies in Madagascar. 

Jane Hill and Inês Martins attended the Gaia Sciences Innovation Summit at Keble College, where Jane spoke on rainforest biodiversity management. Inês participated in workshops on biodiversity metrics and presented her research on global trends in ecosystem services. At the BES Macro Ecology conference in Cardiff, Inês, Jack Hatfield, and others presented research posters, with topics ranging from community similarity to conservation effectiveness. 

Kian Hayles-Cotton, Alex Payne, and Louisa Mamalis took part in Botany Challenge 2024 undergoing 5 stages of competition rounds and achieving 2nd of 28 British and Irish institutions.

Kian Hayles-Cotton discussed UK tree species interactions at the Future of UK Treescapes conference and presented at the Student Botany Festival.
