Cyclone Idai: response, recovery and future risks

On July 11 and 12^th, the IGDC and Africa Network at York will host a workshop, ‘Cyclone Idai: response, recovery and future risks.’ The focus is on disaster planning, climate adaptation and energy infrastructure networks. Recent events in Mozambique provide an opportunity to understand multiple risks and vulnerabilities to extreme weather events and assess future planning approaches in the aftermath of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth. In this workshop, participants will collaboratively assess the ways that existing vulnerabilities to disasters are related to energy provision and use. Understanding how energy generation, provision and use leads to vulnerability—in addition to understanding how energy is used to recover from disasters—is critical to enhancing future resilience.

The workshop is being organized by Joshua Kirshner, Department of Environment and Geography, along with a team of colleagues in Environment and Geography and the Stockholm Environment Institute at York. Key stakeholders who are confirmed to participate include Dr Manuel de Araújo, Honourable Mayor of Quelimane municipality (a coastal city in Zambézia province), Professor Luís Lage, Director of the Faculty of Architecture and Physical Planning of University of Eduardo Mondlane, Luís Amado, emergency response coordinator for Electricidade de Moçambique, E. P. (EDM) (the national electricity utility), Paulo Junior of UN Habitat and the Swedish Embassy in Mozambique, Dr Domingos Macucule, Lecturer in Urban Planning and Director of the Centre for Urban Habitat at University of Eduardo Mondlane, and Hélder dos Santos Gimo, EDM Delegate in the city of Beira.

The workshop is supported by a GCRF Rapid Response fund grant. The participants plan to apply for further funding to scale up the research and extend the collaboration between University of York and Mozambican practitioners and academic partners.
