New Foundations Programme in development
The HR Operations and People and Organisational Development (POD) teams are excited to announce that they are collaborating on a new key initiative: the Management Foundations Programme. This programme will be designed to equip all managers with the essential behaviours, skills and knowledge they need to lead their teams effectively and navigate HR-related responsibilities with confidence.
Why Management Foundations?
Many line managers have reported a lack of confidence in dealing with HR procedures and knowing how to develop their skills as managers. This programme will provide clear guidance, enhance management skills, and ensure all managers at the University are aligned with the Community Without Limits Framework. Ultimately, it will empower managers to handle both routine and non-routine HR matters with greater confidence, autonomy and awareness of ED&I values.
What Will the Programme Include?
The Management Foundations Programme is being developed in two workstreams:
- Workstream 1: Foundation Management Skills - focusing on core management behaviours, skills and embedding ED&I.
- Workstream 2: Application in a HR Context - applying the foundation management skills in the HR context.
The programme will be open to both existing and new line managers, and it is envisaged that the programme will be delivered through a blend of engaging methods, including:
- Interactive workshops covering key topics such as performance management, sickness absence, and conflict resolution.
- E-learning modules for flexible, self-paced learning.
- Toolkits, templates, and best-practice guidance documents covering key topics to support and lead your team.
- A Community of Practice to facilitate peer support and shared learning.
Project Progress and Timeline
The project is currently in the Design phase, with development of training materials and resources underway. We are intending on launching a pilot programme later on this calendar year with full rollout to all managers across the University during 2026. We will provide regular updates on our progress over the coming months through the Staff Digest and HR RoundUp.
Your Feedback is Important!
We want to ensure that the Management Foundations Programme truly meets the needs of our line managers. If you are a current line manager, we would love to hear from you! What are your thoughts on the current management training provision? What key skills or knowledge do you think are missing? What are the key challenges that your team is facing, that you need support and greater confidence in managing? Your feedback will be invaluable in shaping the final programme content and ensuring its effectiveness.
