Information for those with less than 12 months life expectancy

Very sadly, we have recently experienced a number of colleagues who have been diagnosed with serious ill health and advised that they have a life expectancy of less than 12 months. In the face of such terrible news, there are many issues to consider, some of which are highly sensitive. However, if you are a member of the USS, University of York or NHS pension scheme it is absolutely essential that you contact the HR team immediately.

The reason for this urgency is that the member may be eligible to receive a lump sum of their benefits which could be larger than the death in service lump sum. This is particularly the case in USS, where the difference can be very significant.

The award is only due to the member themselves, so there is an urgency to ensure that payment can be awarded to the member and the entitlement to it is not lost.

If you, a colleague or a member of your team is diagnosed with a life expectancy of less than 12 months please alert HR immediately so that we can do the very best for the colleague concerned. Please be reassured that we will treat your contact with the utmost of sensitivity and confidentiality.
