Did you know you may be eligible for paid community leave?
We wanted to take the opportunity to remind colleagues about the 'public and community leave' provision, which forms part of the leave in special circumstances policy.
Under the policy, colleagues can request paid leave to undertake voluntary public service. The public and community leave activities included in the policy are:
- Magistrate
- Local councillor
- School or college governor
- Chairperson of a public body
- Jury service
The leave entitlement varies depending on the role, spanning from 4 days to 18 (for jury duty it is 'as required by the courts'). Please see the policy for full details.
In the first instance, employees should speak to their line manager about the reasons for their leave request and the date/s of the upcoming public service, details can then be captured on the special circumstances form. The manager should consider and process the request in line with the leave in special circumstances procedure.
It may be possible for colleagues to apply for reasonable, unpaid time off for other public duties, please contact hr-Operations@york.ac.uk if you need further advice.
