What is probation?
If you are in grades 1-8, you should undergo a period of probation when you start working at York.
This is to ensure that:
- you are suited to your new role
- you are properly supported as you learn your new job
- you can learn what is expected of you
- your line manager can identify any training needs
The probation process should work alongside the induction process to help you settle into the organisation and learn how to do your new job on a sensible timescale.
You should have regular meetings with your line manager to discuss your progress. At the end of the set period, your manager should let you know whether or not you have completed your probation satisfactorily.
There are three types of probation at York:
- Academic probation
- for new lecturers at grade 7; this normally takes two years
- Research and Teaching probation
- applies to staff in grades 6 - 8; normally takes one year
- Professional and Support staff probation
- six months for support staff in grades 1 - 5
- nine months for support staff in grades 6 - 8
