Paternity leave
Leave and pay entitlements
To be able to take paternity / partner leave and pay you will need to meet the relevant qualifying criteria. You can check your eligibility and if you meet the qualification criteria by referring to the paternity / partner leave scheme section in the 'Family support leave policy'.
If you take paternity / partner leave you can choose to take:
Paternity / partner leave can start on any day of the week but cannot be taken as odd days. The amount of time is the same even if there is more than one child e.g. multiple births or more than one child is placed for adoption as part of the same arrangement.
It is important that you discuss how you plan to take your paternity/partner leave with your manager at the earliest opportunity. This is so that support/cover for your work can be agreed in advance of you taking 6 weeks off either in one block or in a different pattern across the 12 month period.
You will need to submit all dates you intend to take off as part of the same Paternity/Partner application form at the beginning of the process. You will not be able to add in additional weeks once you commence your Paternity/Partner leave.
If you qualify, paternity / partner leave is paid at full pay.
Neonatal Care Leave
- Employees are entitled to neonatal care leave and pay if their newborn baby or babies require neonatal care for 7 consecutive days or more. This is in addition to paternity/ partner leave and pay and the entitlement is up to 12 weeks of full pay.
- Employees should notify their line manager if their baby has been admitted into neonatal care (for at least 7 consecutive days). The line manager should take a note of the date that the baby was admitted into neonatal care and discuss with the employee the leave available to them under the Family Leave policy.
- The employee should notify their line manager once the baby has been discharged from neonatal care. The line manager should take a note of the date that the baby was discharged. Once the leave taken has been agreed and the neonatal dates have been confirmed, the line manager should contact hr-enquiries@york.ac.uk to process the leave request.
Further information can be found in the Family Leave policy, additional provisions.
