Academic career paths
Moving up in your career
Academic, teaching and research staff can apply for promotion each year.
Applications are considered by the Academic Promotions Committee.
Making an application
Applications are usually made in October each year. It is your responsibility to demonstrate that you meet the criteria. Evidence should be open to scrutiny and in the case of research and scholarship, must be based on publicly verifiable and peer-reviewed achievements.
Applicants are notified of the progress of their application in spring, with promotions being effective from the following October.
Considerations
The Committee has due regard to career breaks and relevant personal circumstances such as part-time working, maternity/paternity leave, disability, or long-term illness. While these circumstances might explain delayed career development, they are not viewed as a weakness in a career profile.
Promotions are not cash limited: the University will disregard potential funding issues when considering applications.
