Year 9 and 10 students enjoy Sustainability Enrichment Day at the University

News | Posted on Tuesday 11 June 2024

We welcomed students from local secondary schools to take part in a Sustainability Enrichment Day.

Yesterday, Year 9 and Year 10 students from local schools participated in a "Sustainability Enrichment Day" at the University of York. Seventy students from six schools in the University's PGCE partnership joined a series of workshops on sustainability topics and a group activity to re-design York as a sustainable city.

The Enrichment Day aimed to give students three main opportunities: to expand their knowledge of sustainability, to experience university life and encourage future applications, and to have fun meeting peers from other schools. It was also a chance for our PGCE geography trainees to practise designing and leading workshops.

The first half of the day featured three workshops delivered by seven PGCE Geography teacher trainees. These workshops covered water, energy, food and waste; housing and transport; and employment and community. Students calculated carbon footprints for different families, explored green and ethical jobs, and used New York City as a case study to apply ideas to York.

After lunch, students used what they learned to re-design York as a sustainable city, focusing on transformative change while considering its historic constraints. They came up with brilliant ideas that included both environmental and social sustainability.

The day concluded with a final talk and prizes awarded to All Saints School for the winning sustainable city idea.

A huge thanks to all the schools, students, and staff for engaging in these important sustainability issues!
