We're excited to announce the installation of our brand new martin boxes and tern rafts, set to encourage nesting and support our local wildlife population.
With a lifespan of around 20 years, these new additions should have long-term benefits for our Sand Martins and Terns.
Gordon Eastham, the University's Grounds & Ecology Manager, tells us more about the installation and history of these essential nesting areas:
It's been quite a journey since the installation of our first Sand Martin box on Campus East in Spring 2012. This prototype from Green Future Buildings marked the beginning of our commitment to providing safe havens for these birds. Since then, we've witnessed the need for upgrades and improvements, leading to the recent replacement of older boxes.
The new martin boxes feature taller designs, with nesting chambers positioned higher above the water surface. This adjustment reflects our dedication to understanding and catering to the behaviour of the birds, ensuring optimal nesting conditions for their comfort and safety.
Make sure to look out for these new features when you're next on Campus East!
