How can we create a more environmentally sustainable research culture? These bite-sized podcast episodes offer expert insights on integrating climate action into research. Listen to find out how to make sustainability a part of your research practices.

A new podcast series, Sustainability Conversations, explores practical ways for researchers to integrate climate action into their work. Covering topics such as rethinking research, carbon-conscious conferencing, frugal computing, and asking the awkward questions, these bite-sized episodes offer expert insights and real-world experiences to inspire change.

The podcast supports the University of York’s newly launched Code of Practice for Sustainable Research, which provides a framework and practical guidance on making research more sustainable. In particular, the podcast offers a space for researchers to connect, share practice, and reflect on how to approach research differently. It is designed for researchers, research leaders, and those involved in research training—both at York and beyond—who are looking for ways to embed sustainability into their research practices.

Each episode is approximately 20 minutes long, making it an accessible way to explore sustainability in research. Across 10 episodes, listeners will gain insights into practical strategies for reducing the environmental impact of research while maintaining high quality academic work.

The series is funded by the Enhancing Research Culture Fund at the University of York and has been developed in collaboration with the Department of Education and Environmental Sustainability at York (ESAY). It was recorded at the Creativity Lab and produced by Dr Lucy Atkinson and Anna Morfitt, with Dr Lynda Dunlop.
