Carbon Literacy Training

Relevant climate change learning for everyone.

Get carbon literate with our free training courses on Carbon Literacy open to both staff and students. Training is in the form of two half-day online workshops, along with some self-led learning using materials provided in advance of the courses.

On successful completion of a final individual action plan you will receive Carbon Literacy accreditation from the Carbon Literacy Project.

What is Carbon Literacy?

“Carbon Literacy” is an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis. The term has had occasional use in scientific literature and casual usage but is mainly associated with The Carbon Literacy Project.

Learners who have completed a day’s worth of Carbon Literacy learning can be certified as ‘Carbon Literate’. Today, over 102,700 individuals from over 7,688 organisations are Carbon Literate - are you?

The Carbon Literacy Project

What does the training involve?

Carbon Literacy Training is offered to all University of York staff and students. Regular training is offered throughout the year in the form of 2-half day online interactive sessions. To achieve your Carbon Literacy accreditation you need to attend both half-day sessions. You will also need to complete 2 hours of self-directed study outside of the live training. No background knowledge is required.

After you have completed the training, you will complete a final assessment form detailing what you learnt throughout the training and how you will take your learning forward. Your assessment form will be sent to the Carbon Literacy Project for approval and, if approved, you will be awarded certification.

How can I take part?

Regular training is offered throughout the year. Register your interest by completing our Carbon Literacy Training expression of interest form and you will be emailed with upcoming training dates. Confirmed training dates will also be displayed here.

Become a Carbon Literate trainer

There are also opportunities for “Carbon Literate” staff and students to become paid Carbon Literacy trainers following completion of a separate funded training and the trainer course. Please email sustainability@york.ac.uk if you're interested in discussing this opportunity.
