Science for public good

Andy says: “I have a strong commitment to social justice and how research can help the lives of the more marginalised across the world. That's where science really has a benefit.”

He highlights research innovations through the Institute for Safe Autonomy, the Institute of Mental Health Research, York Biomedical Research Institute and York Environmental Sustainability Institute, as well as ventures to build on the work of BioYorkshire.

About Andy Dougill

Andy joined York in 2022 from the University of Leeds where he completed terms as the Dean for Global Development, the Executive Dean of Faculty of Environment and Head of School of Earth and Environment.

Andy has successfully built long-lasting partnerships across a range of African universities and partner organisations through a strong commitment to impact, capacity building and research training. He also holds a post as an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria and is committed to helping to build York’s collaborations across Africa.

Even though I had never worked at York, it felt like coming home. My parents are from nearby and I feel an affinity to the area.
