Katie Smith

I am the current Equality Officer for UCU York University Branch. In addition to this, I am also a final year PhD researcher based in the Education Department at York. My research mainly focuses on gender, but intersections involving race and social class often appear in my data. As a white, cis woman, I see my role as a member of this group to amplify, listen to and support more marginalised voices than my own. I also hope to feedback the outcomes of these meetings to UCU Exec members. I aspire to provide meaningful contributions to the group, as well as learn from other members of the group on my own learning journey about race and issues concerning inequalities. I hope that the group can work towards creating long-term and impactful changes for the University of York that eventually result in the outcome of an anti-racist institution that supports all students and staff accordingly.
