Liz Wands-Murray
I work as a Social Care Researcher in the School for Business and Society, having previously held a PSS role in the Department of Health Sciences. I have also recently completed a PhD looking at the cultural competence of community based social care for older LGBTQ+ people, considering the experiences of older people and those who work or volunteer in services.
I identify as queer, and I have been a member of the Rainbow Alliance and its Action Group since 2018, becoming co-chair in 2024. I am passionate about EDI and have previously worked with people from marginalised groups such as disability, neurodiversity and sexual identity. I decided to get involved as previous organisations I have worked in did not have these kinds of opportunities for involvement, and I've often felt I've had to hide my sexual identity rather than celebrate it. This group, and its links to other networks in the University, have really helped me to feel a valued part of something worthwhile.
I have been involved in various activities since joining, including Pride parades, regular action focused meetings, work with YUSU around LGBTQ+ specific student support, running listening events and developing the Equality and Diversity web pages. I am also on the Board of Directors for Queer Arts (UK) based in York, providing a valuable link between the University and the wider local LGBTQ+ community.
