Practical information
We have advice covering practical issues like changing your details with the University, facilities like all gender toilets, and sources of support on our website.
Supporting our trans and non-binary community
Find your community
The Rainbow Alliance Staff Network is a fantastic and thriving network made up of members of our LGBTQ+ community. They organise social events, public lectures and network meetings throughout the year. You can learn more on the Rainbow Alliance Network webpage.
If you self-identify as LGBTQ+, you're invited to join LGBTQ+ Students Network and be part of the community! The network is managed by YorQueer (formerly LGBTQ Social), the LGBTQ+ society at York. For more information about the network or the society, email yorqueer
We can all support our trans community
Through small gestures to normalise things like sharing pronouns, by knowing how trans students and staff can access support and find networks, and by taking part in our trans awareness training, you can support our trans community.
Be a visible ally
Sometimes it’s the little things that help us to foster a more inclusive campus environment. By wearing a rainbow lanyard or a pronoun sticker on your staff/student ID badge you can show your support for our trans and non-binary community, signalling inclusivity and helping others to feel comfortable to do the same. You can also include your pronouns (eg he/him/his) on your email signature as a practical way of enabling others to know how you wish to be addressed.
- Request a rainbow lanyard or pronoun sticker by emailing equality

Supporting trans and non-binary students and staff
The University is committed to creating an environment that is safe, inclusive and welcoming for all of our trans staff and students. To support this, we have created guidance for staff providing support.
Our Glossary of EDI terminology includes a section on gender, to help you understand the terms associated with gender identity and to raise awareness of associated issues.
Take part in our training
We run a series of online trans awareness training sessions for staff and PG students who teach, delivered by the charity Gendered Intelligence. These sessions introduce individuals to the key concepts crucial to understanding some of the barriers faced by members of our trans community, relevant terminology and related legislation. For more information and to register for an upcoming session visit the Learning Management System (LMS) training calendar or contact us at equality
