International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia 2024
17 May is International day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. This year’s theme is “No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all.”
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is a global initiative that aims to raise awareness about discrimination, violence, and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community.
What we’re doing on the day
We extend a warm open invite to all LGBTQ+ staff and students to join us at a drop-in from 12noon to 2pm, in Church Lane CL/A/027. Refreshments will be provided.
The drop-in will provide an opportunity to:
- sign up to LGBTQ+ staff and student networks
- learn how to report harassment, bullying and hate incidents at the University
- meet other LGBTQ+ staff and students
- find out what the University is doing to support our LGBTQ+ staff and student community
The Conduct and Respect team will be Demystifying Report and Support at 12.30pm. The Equality and Diversity Office and Rainbow Alliance will provide an update on the Rainbow Alliance Listening Exercise and Action Plan. Rainbow Alliance (staff) and YUSU (student) LGBTQ+ Networks will be in attendance if you’d like to join.
This event is sponsored by UNISON’s Year of LGBT+ Workers and information about joining a Trade Union will be available. Refreshments are provided by UNISON.
If you want to find out more about any of these topics, but can’t attend in person, we will be running a virtual drop-in from 1pm to 2pm via Zoom. Conversations will not be confidential, as others may also be in the zoom session.

Find your community
The Rainbow Alliance Staff Network is a fantastic and thriving network made up of members of our LGBTQ+ community. They organise social events, public lectures and network meetings throughout the year. You can learn more on the Rainbow Alliance Network webpage.
The YUSU LGBTQ+ Network is a student group which helps LGBTQ+ students get to know each other with discussions, relaxed meetings, and opportunities to get involved with events like York Pride. Follow YUSU LGBTQ+ on Instagram for information about ongoing campaigns and news about upcoming events.
Be a visible ally
Sometimes it’s the little things that help us to foster a more inclusive campus environment. By wearing a rainbow lanyard or a pronoun sticker on your staff/student ID badge, you can show your support for our trans and non-binary community, signalling inclusivity and helping others to feel comfortable to do the same. You can also include your pronouns (eg he/him/his) on your email signature as a practical way of enabling others to know how you wish to be addressed.
- Request a rainbow lanyard or pronoun sticker by emailing equality@york.ac.uk.
