Call for events - Black History Month October 2023
Help celebrate Black History Month 2023 by raising awareness, attending events and organising events in your own department.
The University is planning to host a series of events throughout the month of October in celebration of Black History Month 2023, and encourages departments across the institution to join in with these celebrations by raising awareness of, attending and organising their own events.
The theme for Black History Month 2023 is Saluting Our Sisters. Learn more about Black History Month and see inspiration for event ideas.
Events can take the form of a talk, panel discussion, film screening, performance, awareness raising campaign, exhibition/stand, workshop, social media campaign etc. If you would like advice about the content and/or organisation of your event, along with assistance in promoting it via the University's online ED&I events calendar, please email equality@york.ac.uk. If you would like to send us details of an upcoming event that you have already started to organise, you can do so via our events submission form.

To get ourselves ready for the Black History Month, we strongly encourage all our staff and students to gain a better understanding of structural and everyday racism by doing the free Union Black: Britain’s Black cultures and steps to anti-racism online module. We are aiming for one in ten of the University community to complete the training by 1 October 2023. Will you be part of our anti-racist movement?
