Expanding our renewable energy infrastructure.

Challenge

As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction, we have been further expanding our renewable energy infrastructure. With an increasing demand for clean energy solutions, we have strategically invested in solar photovoltaic (PV) technology to reduce our carbon footprint and enhance on-campus energy production. These efforts align with our broader environmental strategy and commitment to net-zero carbon emissions.

In this installation project specifically we needed to map out the logistics of integrating PV technology into existing infrastructure on the estate, without creating disruption to learning and research activities.

Solution

To address these challenges, we initiated a large-scale solar panel installation project across multiple campus buildings. Over 1,000 solar panels are being installed across three key buildings on Campus West:

  • Harry Fairhurst Building – 118 kWp capacity
  • Hull/York Medical School (HYMS) – 159 kWp capacity
  • Church Lane Building – 234 kWp capacity

The installations will have a combined output of 513kWp.

The installations are part of a broader solar PV expansion that includes existing rooftop and ground-mounted arrays, such as those at the Institute of Safe Autonomy, the Nursery on campus east, and the Wolfson Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratories (WACL). Once fully completed (by Spring 2025), the total solar energy production capacity on campus will provide a maximum production of 700 kWp. Enough to power approximately 200 domestic houses.

Results

The expansion of our solar energy system is expected to deliver significant environmental and financial benefits as we continue to invest in our energy infrastructure and make meaningful steps toward a more sustainable and resilient campus.
