Hearing loops

Approved meeting and teaching rooms on campus

These are rooms with a hearing loop that has been tested and endorsed by members of staff with hearing loss. Additional equipment may also be required where a room layout has been changed from its default. For example, extra microphones, if a seminar room is changed to boardroom style for a meeting.

In addition, the approved rooms, with the exception of K/133, are also wheelchair accessible.

Other rooms on campus

In addition the following rooms on campus have been tested and endorsed by members of staff with hearing loss as being suitable for meetings as they have good lighting and acoustics but no hearing loops or microphones. These are also wheelchair accessible. These rooms can be booked during vacations.

It is recommended to book additional Revolabs microphones from the Audio Visual Centre for meetings.

Information about rooms on campus with hearing loops can be found on the room information section of the Audio Visual Centre web pages.

It may also be possible to use some teaching spaces on campus for meetings with advice and assistance from the Audio Visual Centre.

Note on Radar keys

Radar keys, also known as NKS keys, are large silver keys which can be used to open accessible toilets in the UK. Locks which require RADAR keys are often found in public areas such as restaurants and are held by a disabled person. They are intended to prevent misuse of these spaces by the general public and keep accessible toilets as available as possible for those who need to use them.

The University does not use Radar keys as standard. This decision has been approved by the Accessibility Working Group, and takes into account the following:

  • Radar keys reduce overall inclusivity of our facilities provision
    • Radar keys prohibit the use of facilities for people who may have a temporary need and do not possess a key
    • Radar keys on lifts are not suitable for most lift users who access our estate and so will not be installed
  • We appreciate that in some limited instances a radar lock may need to be installed, and these will be addressed on an individual basis with an emphasis on finding alternative solutions to reduce misuse of accessible facilities
