Thank you for your interest in YCL; we hope to make the application process as straightforward as possible for you.
Please ensure that you read YCL Job Applicant Privacy Notice and this page before you apply for a YCL job. This page explains our application process and how to get in touch with YCL HR if you need assistance.
You can register on the University of York’s job application portal, this portal also covers the applications for YCL roles. The portal allows you to apply, check on the status of your application(s) and register for email job alerts. To register you will need to provide your email address and a password.
All job posts will include a job description and person specification to help you find the right role for you. Once you have found a job you are interested in applying for, click on the ‘Apply now’ button. You will be guided through the stages of the application form. This will include inputting contact details and some personal information, uploading a CV and cover letter (if required) and providing contact information for two referees (one of which must be your most recent employer). Your referees will only be contacted if you are successful following the interview stage.
You do not need to complete your application in one session; just simply save your application and sign out. You can come back at any point before the closing date to submit it.
The system will retain information you provide that is specific to you. This includes your personal details and, for certain positions, your educational qualifications and your work experience. You can change or add information in these sections in any future applications. This information is held confidentially and for a limited period of time.
Information that is specific to the job - where you saw the vacancy, your referees, their contact information and your application documents, must be provided for each application.
Prior to the advert closing date, you can amend your application after you have submitted it. Sign in to your account and use the ‘withdraw application’ option. You can then re-find the job on the website and apply again. You will be able to amend your previous application and re-submit it for ease.
Remember that the selection panel can only make decisions using the information provided in your application.
We recommend that your CV and covering letter use a concise style to explain fully how your skills and experience relate to the essential and desirable criteria in the person specification.
We also recommend that you include your full employment and education history, detailing key role responsibilities.
Applications can be submitted up to midnight (UK time) on the closing date. Once you have completed all sections of the application form, submitting your application should only take a few moments. We do not recommend waiting until close to the closing time to submit your application.
Once the vacancy has closed, the shortlisting panel will review every application against the person specification and agree which candidates they would like to interview.
All candidates will be notified by email to say whether or not they have been successful at this stage. If there are any significant delays to the selection process we will inform you by email.
We prefer applications to be made online as it helps us to provide you and our internal customers with the best possible service. However, if you find it difficult to apply online, please contact us so that we can assist you or discuss alternative methods of application. You can telephone us on +44 (0)1904 328413 or email us at ycl-hradmin@york.ac.uk. Please state the job title and reference number.
We appreciate the time and effort put into your application and that if you are not shortlisted you may find feedback useful. However, we receive thousands of applications each year and regrettably we do not have the resources to offer feedback to all applicants who are not offered an interview.
If you have any queries or require any further assistance in relation to YCL's jobs, contact YCL HR by telephone on +44 (0)1904 328413 or email ycl-hradmin@york.ac.uk.
