Parasites
This duck was created by Peg Walrad and Robert Rothenberg.
Parasites have fascinating shapes that change dramatically through their life cycles.
As a researcher and educator, I am continually examining, discussing and drawing these ornate organisms whose natural patterns are reminiscent of a paisley theme. The Parasite Paisley Long Boi was created with ink and acrylic paint.
The Department of Biology at York is a world-renowned centre for parasitology and infectious disease research. Most parasites are zoonotic, having both human and animal hosts. Long Boi's disappearance highlighted for me the relevance of our Department's research themes connecting disease and environment.
As a former veterinary nurse, the lack of available treatments for some ailments inspired my research career. Over 15 labs in our Department combat global neglected tropical diseases, making York the perfect place for me to pursue my research.
