Infection
This duck was created by Shannon Reed.
My duck design was inspired by the current outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza that is affecting UK birds. My design involves paintings of nine different bird species that have been significantly affected by avian influenza, including birds of prey, waterfowl, garden birds, and sea-faring birds.
My first step was to research which bird species have been significantly affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza, using the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and UK Government websites.
I then looked for reference photos of my chosen birds and started to draw my design onto A4 paper.
Infection and immunology is a key focus for the Department of Biology, in partnership with the York Biomedical Research Institute. Researchers also look at disease in the context of conservation of endangered populations in our environmental change researchchallenge.
