GenerationResearch
This duck was created by Jillian Barlow and Beatrice Rix.
The GenerationResearch duck highlights stunning confocal microscopy work showing the structure of cells in fine detail, using beautiful fluorescent colours. The image was produced by Beatrice Rix who was a Generation Research summer student in 2021.
GenerationResearch provides paid research and technical experiences with a focus on widening access and increasing inclusivity to these important opportunities. The studentship scheme started here at the University of York but is now open to any student going to university in Yorkshire, with projects hosted across the UK and in the US.
Beatrice Rix was an undergraduate at York who spent ten weeks in the Bioscience Technology Facility at York in 2021. Beatrice learnt how to use the Zeiss confocal microscope. Funds for this were provided via Generation Research by our industrial partner, Zeiss.
This led to a technical position for Bea in the Department of Biology here at York, and subsequently a PhD in microscopy at the Francis Crick Institute in London in 2023.
Bea and all our GenerationResearch students are a highlight and our inspiration at GenerationResearch. They are amazing and we work hard to help these students access important practical lab experiences so that they are able to see and access research science as a career option.
