This course will provide you with the academic knowledge and practical skills to pursue marketing careers in private, public and not-for-profit sectors around the world. Our graduates have gone on to work for organisations such as Nestlé, Accenture, EPSON, and Coca-Cola.
In recognition of the valuable skills our students gain, this course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). Successfully completing the MSc Global Marketing confers Graduate Gateway status, taking you partway towards a professional CIM qualification.
Guest speakers from large multinational companies, small businesses and public sector organisations lead regular discussions on issues linked to their own businesses or past experiences.
You'll study a range of core modules which introduce key concepts in global marketing and international business. You'll be introduced to emerging theories in digital and ethical marketing, plus a choice of option modules that allow you to specialise in brand management, advanced research methods, or long-term marketing planning for services.
You'll also focus your efforts on an 8,000-word (Applied) or 10,000-word (Academic) dissertation.
You will also study one option module. In previous years, options have covered topics such as:
Our modules may change to reflect the latest academic thinking and expertise of our staff, and in line with Department/School academic planning.
You can choose to undertake either:
To complete the Marketing Dissertation (Academic), students will need to have studied Advanced Research Methods as their option module.
Dissertation (Academic)
The dissertation requires you to initiate, design, and implement a substantial research project linked to your degree. You'll have three to four months to complete an 8,000-word (Applied) or 10,000-word (Academic) dissertation based on your own original research idea.
You can choose to focus your research on a topic that interests you. It could be a chance to explore a previous topic in greater depth, or investigate a marketing challenge in an industry close to your heart. Recent titles include:
You'll work under the guidance of a personal supervisor with expertise in the subject you're studying. They'll help you develop your research project, including identifying theories and methods to investigate and analyse your topic.
Dissertation (Applied)
This individual study module gives you the opportunity to showcase the summation of your learning throughout the year in an 8,000-word project. You'll focus on the development of professional skills and attributes through a combination of academic and practitioner
input, combining the management frameworks and theories that you have learned in earlier modules with the analysis of secondary data learned in the Research Methods module.
You will learn from a Director of Marketing how to develop a professional marketing presentation and write a professional marketing report based on a case study set by an agency in collaboration with your module tutor.
You'll use these research skills to develop actionable managerial implications, carrying out practice based research into your area of study. This replicates an activity that you might be expected to undertake in business practice.
In the first section, you'll focus on developing an individual presentation. For the second part, you will be developing your own professional marketing report. At the end, the top student will gain an extra certificate from the agency for their outstanding achievement. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your professional skills and combine those with your academic knowledge. Finally you will get the chance to develop your self-awareness, which is vital for your development as a practitioner in the international business environment.

One of the main reasons why I wanted to come to York specifically is because I had consistently heard really good things both about the town and the University... I got to grow a lot as a person and I made a lot of really lovely memories that I'll take with me and cherish.Andrea, Msc Global Marketing
