Who Wrote the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle?

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle was probably compiled during the reign of Alfred the Great and copies were sent to every major religious house in England to keep up-to-date. However, each monastic house recorded events from their own perspective and today we have nine different versions of the chronicle which tell slightly different stories. This day school will explore how and why the Chronicle was originally put together, and why the differences between the surviving chronicles matter in shaping our understanding of the Anglo-Saxon period.
